Bulldogs Boxing and Community Activities Grant

How do Bulldogs Boxing and Community Activities help Veterans?

Bulldogs is a partnership between Bulldogs Boxing & Community Activities and Port Talbot Boxing Club. Its charitable arm delivers community focussed activities whilst the boxing club delivers the sporting element of the scheme.

As part of its activities, Bulldogs provides a central hub for members of the Armed Forces community.

The hub works with SSAFA, and other partner organisations, to address many varied individual needs of our military family. It holds a weekly Veteran Drop In for veterans to meet other ex-servicemen and women whilst supporting them to develop a healthier lifestyle. This social outlet helps ease individuals back into civilian life.

How has Veterans' Foundation supported Bulldogs Boxing and Community Activities?

The Veterans’ Foundation grant has funded Peter Jones (ex-Artillery) who consolidates and enhances the strong Armed Forces Drop-In meetings. Peter greets veterans and develops plans of action to meet their needs. Those needs can include fitness, employment, social activities or arranging consultations with partner organisations for additional support.

Stuart Phillips, a trustee at Bulldogs, said: “The grant has provided mental and physical support where needed and is making a huge difference to veterans’ lives.”

Bulldogs have now supported 116 veterans improving their overall wellbeing. 96 veterans have been involved through fitness classes and up to 30 veterans at a time are attending the weekly Drop-Ins.

Veteran and Bulldog regular Lynn Jarvis concluded: “I’ve gone from being housebound for years to looking forward to the next time I go to the Bulldogs. I get out and socialise and I’ve even started to do some fitness. My life has changed for the better.”
