How does Royal Star & Garter help Veterans?

Royal Star & Garter has provided British Veterans with care since 1916. The charity was founded in order to care for soldiers returning from the theatres of World War 1. Today the charity provides specialist nursing, dementia and therapeutic care for Veterans.

Over one-third of dementia beds offered to UK Veterans are provided by Royal Star & Garter, this is testament to the quality of care for dementia patients that is associated with the charity. With years of experience in caring for Veterans with dementia, the charity is well-positioned to ensure that the residents are able to lead the best lives they can. One key way that they achieve this quality of dementia care is by ensuring that the staff treat the residents more like friends than patients.

With a clear emphasis on enabling residents to feel as though they are home at each of the 3 homes Royal Star & Garter oversees, it is not hard to understand why the charity has won many awards for its quality of care. Each house has a homemaker who ensures that it feels like a home that every day has stimulating activities to entertain the residents.

Independence and dignity are two core concepts behind the care provided to Veterans who live at homes managed by the charity. Residents are encouraged to keep as much of their independence as possible, and staff fulfil the role of companion, by being on hand to spend quality time with the Veterans in order to be present as friends.

Royal Star & Garter do not just care for older Veterans, they also offer support to younger Veterans who have received injuries as a result of their service. The charity has been operating for over a century, and have treated many injured Veterans during these years. Often, helping injured Veterans establish their independence is a key aim of the staff.
