Care Community Veterans in Suffolk Receive Support Boost

February 21 2024

Grant funding from the Veterans’ Foundation will enable a Suffolk charity to continue to offer an information, advice, guidance and emotional support service to UK veterans and ex-servicemen and women who are in caring situations.

Suffolk Family Carers have been helping family carers of all ages across Suffolk get the support they need to live fuller lives for more than 30 years.

Sarah Potter, Mental Health & Wellbeing Service Manager said: “We are so pleased with this news. This grant award will allow us to continue to deliver our project working with UK veterans and ex-service personnel in caring roles. Our current project is funded by the Veterans’ Foundation and we are so grateful that they have agreed to fund us for a further 12 months.”

“Our project is quite unique in that it supports those caring for a UK veteran or ex-armed forces member, but it also offers support to UK veterans and ex-serving personnel who may have a caring role themselves – many people assume that they will always require the care, but often they are the caregivers," she added.

“Much of the project’s work focuses on raising awareness and helping people become informed about the rights, entitlements and services that are available, including information about The Armed Forces Covenant. In our experience, many family carers who are from the armed forces are reluctant to seek help, and many, especially those who completed their national service, do not realise they are considered a veteran.”

David Shaw, Founder and CEO of Veterans Foundation said; “The Veterans’ Foundation are delighted to assist Suffolk Family Carers in their fantastic work supporting the veteran caring community, whether that be those who have served and now require care or those ex-service personnel who have a caring role themselves.”

“We hope that this grant award will allow Suffolk Family Carers’ service to go from success to success and, in turn, help those they support to do the same.”

The Veterans’ Foundation has now given more than £18 million in grant awards to over 420 small and medium sized military charities and charitable organisations all over the UK, raising their funds through generous donations, legacies and the community of over 100,000 Veterans’ Lottery players.
