£30,000 Hospital Help for Nottinghamshire Veterans

February 01 2022

A Veterans’ Foundation grant will provide Nottinghamshire veterans with practical and emotional support ensuring that ‘no one goes through the worry of illness or injury alone’.

The £30,000 award will be used by the St John and Red Cross Defence Medical Welfare Service (DMWS) to continue aiding veterans and their families when they are receiving treatment in hospital.

Funding will also allow DMWS to support the NHS with discharge plans, where needed, and coordinate ongoing support in community health settings or at home while a veteran is on a treatment pathway.

“We are delighted to have received such a generous grant from the Veterans’ Foundation,” said Paul Gaffney, CEO of DMWS.

“This grant means that veterans do not have to face illness, isolation and the stress and anxiety of the healthcare experience alone.”

DMWS are an independent charity providing medical welfare support to Armed Forces veterans, as well as NHS staff and emergency services personnel, the Merchant Navy and all their immediate families.

Overall, DMWS has supported over 350 veterans with issues associated to illness and isolation, as well as 37 with end-of-life care – this £30k grant will allow the charity to help many more.

“The Veterans’ Foundation’s ongoing support and commitment will allow us to continue to provide medical welfare support to veterans throughout Nottinghamshire, furthering our commitment to supporting those who have served the nation,” added Paul.

The grant is one of 50 awarded by the Veterans’ Foundation in the last round of grants, totalling a huge £1.1 million – the first time the Foundation have given a seven-figure sum in a quarter.

It means that the Veterans’ Foundation have now given over £9.1 million in grants to more than 290 UK-based military charities since inception in 2016.

All of the grants are made possible by generous donors and the players of the Veterans’ Lottery, who not only support our veterans in need, but are also in with a chance to win £35,000 every month.
