Military family celebrates £75,000 win in the Veterans’ Lottery draw

July 21 2025

A military family is celebrating after Ruth McIntosh scooped the £75,000 rollover jackpot in the latest Veterans’ Lottery draw.

Ruth, who’s from Elgin, in Scotland, admitted that she thought it was a ‘hoax' when she received the phone to inform her that she’d won first prize in our June draw.

Her late husband, current partner and son all served in the Queen's Own Highlanders and the 76-year-old’s Father and Grandfather were also in the military.

She’s been playing the Veteran’s Lottery for a couple of years and says her membership is very special to her because she knows how difficult it is for veterans to adjust to civilian life after service.

“When my late husband came out of the army he really was a lost soul and just couldn’t fit in or adapt to life outside of the military, said Ruth.

“Back then there was even less support for veterans than there is now and unfortunately there are so many who were and are in exactly the same situation.

“The Veterans’ Foundation do so much amazing work to help fund charities that directly support veterans and their families through tough times.

“It’s an honour to give £10 a month to support this vital work and I’ve never even thought about winning.”

Ruth is now £75,000 better off and becomes the 6th winner of the rollover jackpot since we increased the top prize from £50,000 last Summer.

“When I got the call I really thought someone was having a laugh with me and I couldn’t check my numbers or anything because I was at my sewing club at the time and didn’t have my membership card with me,” Ruth continued.

“To win this amount of money is just fantastic and means that I’ll be able to do great things for my family as I have six grandchildren and three great grand children, plus my partner will soon be celebrating his 80th birthday.

“I also plan to give some of my winnings to charity too."

Second place in the June draw went to  David, from Pershore in Worcestershirere, who pocketed £3, 500.

The Veterans’ Lottery is now the UK’s Largest single-charity lottery and is a key funding stream for the Foundation’s grant programme.
