Royal Naval Association minibuses help WWII veterans attend VE Day 81 reception at Downing Street thanks to £30,000 Veterans’ Foundation grant.

The Royal Naval Association (RNA) has received £30,000 in funding from Veterans’ Foundation to support its vital minibus transport service, helping veterans stay connected to their communities and take part in important national events.

The service recently enabled two Second World War veterans, former Wren Dorothy Walsh and Royal Navy veteran Ken Arkell, to attend a VE Day 81 reception at Number 10 Downing Street.

The RNA minibuses transported them into central London for the commemorative event, recognising their service and contribution during the Second World War.

Captain Bill Oliphant, CEO of the Royal Naval Association, said: “We are deeply grateful to Veterans’ Foundation for this generous £30,000 grant, which makes a real difference to our members.

“Seeing our WWII veterans travel to Number 10 for the VE Day 81 reception was a powerful reminder of why this service matters.

"These minibuses are much more than transport.

"They help keep our naval community connected, active and able to take part in moments of national significance.

“This funding will help us maintain the highest safety standards and continue providing a service that many veterans rely on every day.

"We are incredibly thankful for the Foundation’s support.”

Dorothy Walsh served as a codebreaker during the Second World War, a role her family only learned about decades later.

Ken Arkell served in the Royal Navy across multiple ships and shore establishments throughout the war.

Throughout the year, the RNA minibuses support veterans by providing transport to welfare activities, remembrance events, outreach visits, social gatherings and community-based support services across the UK.

The service is particularly important for older veterans and those without access to reliable transport, helping reduce isolation and strengthen social connection.

The £30,000 grant from Veterans’ Foundation will fund an ongoing maintenance and safety programme, including annual MOTs, servicing, preventative maintenance, insurance, roadside assistance and essential repairs.

Funding will also support the upkeep of accessibility features such as wheelchair lifts, restraints and safety equipment, helping ensure safe, inclusive and dignified travel for all passengers.

By backing trusted organisations like the Royal Naval Association, Veterans’ Foundation helps ensure those who have served can continue to access the support, connection and recognition they deserve.
