The Veterans’ Foundation, one of the UK’s fastest-growing military charities, has appointed Andrew Anderson (pictured right) as its new Chair, marking a pivotal leadership transition as the organisation prepares to launch its next 10-year plan.
Andrew, who has served as a trustee at the organisation for the past three years, succeeds Peter Mountford MBE (pictured left), who steps down after a decade of service.
Peter played a transformative role in the creation and development of the Veterans’ Foundation. He worked closely with the charity’s founder, Major General (Ret) David Shaw CBE, to establish the Veterans’ Lottery, a nationwide source of funding to support British Armed Forces veterans in need.
Since its founding in 2016, and with Peter’s leadership and guidance as Chair, the Veterans’ Foundation has awarded over £32 million in grants to more than 550 charities. These organisations provide vital support to serving personnel, veterans, and their families, including mental health care, homelessness support, employment training, crisis intervention, and community programmes.
Reflecting on his time with the Foundation, Peter said: "Working alongside David to establish and grow the Veterans’ Foundation has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. Together, we have created an organisation that truly supports those who served, and I am proud of the difference we have made in the lives of veterans and their families."
Earlier this year, the charity’s founder, Major General (Ret) David Shaw CBE, also stepped down, closing the Foundation’s formative chapter and paving the way for its next phase of growth.
Following seven years with the Parachute Regiment, Andrew went on to build, lead, and exit multiple technology companies over three decades. Drawing on deep experience in strategy, growth, and organisational leadership, he now serves as a non-executive chair for several investor-backed businesses. His blend of military service, entrepreneurial leadership, and board experience underpins his commitment to supporting the veterans’ community and guiding the Foundation into its next decade.
Andrew Anderson said: “I’m very grateful to Peter for his leadership and the personal mentorship he has shown me. He has helped shape the Veterans’ Foundation into a vital force for good. It’s a privilege to now serve as Chair as we grow our grant-making and support even more organisations serving our Armed Forces community.”
In 2025, the Veterans’ Foundation also strengthened its leadership team with the appointments of Jane Gurney as CEO and Stella Atherstone as COO. Together with Andrew, they will drive the Foundation’s strategy and shape its ambitions for the next decade.
Jane Gurney, CEO of the Veterans’ Foundation, said: "With Andrew as Chair and Stella as COO and co-leader, we have a leadership team with the experience and drive to take the Foundation into its next 10-year plan. The impact we have achieved so far shows the real difference we’re making, and we’re ready to help even more charities deliver life-changing work for veterans and their families."
About the Veterans’ Foundation
Founded in 2016, the Veterans’ Foundation works with hundreds of charities and organisations across the UK that support the Armed Forces community — including cadets, serving personnel, veterans, and their families across the Royal Navy, British Army, and Royal Air Force.
As a pan-service funder, the Foundation provides grants from a few hundred pounds up to £200,000, enabling organisations of all sizes to deliver essential support. Its Small, Standard, and Salary Grant Programmes fund projects in five key areas:
- Health and wellbeing – PTSD, depression, trauma, and addiction
- Housing and homelessness – safe accommodation and tailored support
- Employment, education and skills – helping veterans transition to civilian life
- Tackling disadvantage – supporting widows, dependants, and families
- Community and relationships – rebuilding connection, belonging, and peer support
The Veterans’ Lottery, the UK’s largest single-cause lottery, remains the main source of funding for the Foundation’s grants programme.
