Veterans' Housing scheme receive boost

May 06 2020

Veterans’ Foundation is delighted to support Housing Options Scotland with a grant.

How do Housing Options Scotland help veterans?

Housing Options Scotland run a project called Military Matters, this arm of Housing Options Scotland exists to provide housing solutions to veterans and their families. Military Matters started in 2012 and has grown from strength to strength, since 2012, over 1,000 veterans and their families have been supported to find the right housing for their specific needs across Scotland.

Military Matters offers all of its advice and support free of charge to veterans and their families, they pride themselves on never turning anyone away.

As Military Matters operates across each of the 32 local Scottish authorities, the charity project works with local councils, The British Armed Forces and other veterans’ charities to ensure they can offer the best possible support to the veterans who need it the most. Homelessness and disabilities affect many service-leavers; Military Matters help to ensure that veterans suffering are looked after in Scotland.

Housing Options Scotland’s CEO Moira Bayne said ‘We continue to see a high demand for our Military Matters project, in the last quarter alone, we have seen a 50% increase in referrals. Since the project started in 2012, we have helped people with a multitude of issues.

How does Veterans’ Foundation support Housing Options Scotland?

It has been recently announced that Veterans’ Foundation will support Military Matters financially until March 2012. This enables Housing Options Scotland to operate their veterans’ housing project effectively and ensure that Armed Forces service-leavers are catered to when planning their next steps.

Veterans Foundation CEO David Shaw noted “The Veterans’ Foundation is delighted that the grant to Housing Options Scotland has enabled them to help many veterans find accommodation to suits their needs.  It is so important that veterans and their dependents have a sound base from which to make a successful transition from military to civilian life."

Moira Bayne explains how much Veterans’ Foundation’s support means to the charity: “We are delighted and very grateful to receive continuing support from the Veterans’ Foundation, which will enable us to help more members of the Armed Forces community across Scotland.”

One way in which Veterans’ Foundation grant money will be used is to pay a Housing Options Broker. This person provides information, advice and support to veterans and their families on private/social renting, homeownership and specialist housing adaptations in all areas of Scotland. This is a key role in ensuring the best possible support can be provided to veterans and their families.
